In recent news, first time Chennai Corporation is going to digitally maps its ward boundaries , streets and utilities in eight wards.
The wards which will be digitally mapped using Geographical Information System (GIS) are Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur and is set to begin shortly.
The digital mapping and door to door survey data when linked with GIS technology will explore the possibility of increasing property tax revenue, solid waste management, road planning and civic services at ward level.
“Though we have digital mapping of all streets in Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Anna Nagar and Adyar, work on other zones is yet to begin,” said an official.
The civic body will also study the possibility of using the GIS developed by TANGEDCO as it includes over 42 layers, including junction boxes, transformers and high-tension lines.
