The Corporation of Chennai has passed a resolution to use Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in property assessment and tax collection. At present, property values are calculated based on data collected from various sources (guideline and market values) that differ widely. This method of assessing property tax has caused significant revenue loss to the civic body.

Detailed base maps with required data will be prepared by GIS based information systems. Tax will be calculated based on the GIS data which will be updated at regular intervals. The Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services in its letter to the Corporation of Chennai on June 19 had agreed to appoint consultants to assist them in the process. Training will be imparted to Corporation revenue department officials regarding the GIS based property evaluation and tax assessment system.
