The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has initiated an advanced heli-borne geophysical survey in the Sukinda and Danagadi blocks of Odisha’s Jajpur district. This operation employs a custom-made Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) equipped with magnetic, spectrometric, and gravity systems, aiming to create high-resolution 3D imaging of subsurface geology up to a depth of 500 meters.
The primary objective of this survey is to enhance the precision and efficiency of mineral exploration in the region. By utilizing advanced geophysical techniques, geologists can gain a comprehensive understanding of subsurface structures and regional tectonics, thereby identifying potential mineral-rich zones.
Ganesh Chandra Bhuyan, Senior Manager at Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) in Jajpur, highlighted that the heli-borne survey will assist geophysicists in data acquisition, processing, and interpretation. He emphasized that integrating geological and remote-sensing data will facilitate geological mapping and pinpoint target blocks for mineral prospecting.

However, the sudden start of the heli-borne geophysical survey has raised concerns. Local authorities, including Jajpur District Collector P. Anvesha Reddy, stated they were unaware of the survey beforehand. Residents, especially in tribal-dominated areas like Kaliapani and Chingudipala, expressed unease over the low-altitude helicopter flights, fearing displacement or resource exploitation.
This initiative is part of GSI’s broader strategy to modernize mineral exploration across India. In recent years, the organization has increasingly adopted advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and drone-based surveys to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of its operations. For instance, in March 2024, GSI engaged AI and machine learning in mineral exploration to foster self-reliance in mineral resources.
The heli-borne survey in Jajpur represents a significant step forward in utilizing cutting-edge technology for mineral exploration. However, the incident underscores the necessity for effective communication and community engagement to ensure that local stakeholders are informed and involved in such initiatives.
