KU to Host 13th Annual GIS Day to Explore Innovations in Mapping Technology

University of KansasOn November 19, The University of Kansas will host the 13th annual GIS Day @ KU. The all-day event is part of a worldwide celebration that showcases recent developments and practical applications in geographic information systems, or GIS.

The event, which will be held from 8:30 a.m to 5:00 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Kansas Union, is free and open to the public. GIS Day @ KU will include seminars presented by GIS experts at KU and from other companies and universities nationwide, spanning topics from exploration with Google Maps to the role of GIS in K-12 education. The event will also host an information and job fair and a student research competition.

GIS technologies allow users to create, archive and analyze spatially referenced data and imagery. Users can then share that information via maps and charts, online or through geospatial software. GIS combines the visual appeal and effectiveness of a map with the technological capabilities and increased accessibility of digital geographic information.

“GIS Day @ KU reflects the cross-disciplinary nature of GIS, drawing from those in the sciences, social sciences, humanities and more,” said Rhonda Houser, GIS specialist with KU Libraries. “Our speakers throughout the day will highlight an array of topics, such as unmanned aircraft systems technology, mapping in the cloud, and phylogeography.”

KU Libraries is a campus partner in facilitating GIS and mapping-related research. The Libraries’ new Center for Graduate Initiatives and Engagement aids in teaching on campus, as well as assisting students, staff and faculty. The GIS and Data Lab in Watson Library provides assistance in finding and working with geospatial data, hosting workshops and other instructional GIS resources.

GIS Day @ KU is sponsored by the KU School of Business, KU Libraries, Bartlett & West, KU Department of Geography, KU Environmental Studies Program and KU Institute for Policy & Social Research, among others.

Those interested may attend individual events or enjoy the entire symposium. For a detailed schedule and to register, please visit gis.ku.edu/gisday/2014/.
