Abu Dhabi Education Council Has Introduced GIS Education in Schools

Abu Dhabi Education CouncilAccording to recent news, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) has started an initiative as major improvement in education standard with the induction of Geographical Information System (GIS) technology into Mathematics and Science.

A geographic information system (GIS) allows you to investigate data, see it, and use it to answer questions in context. GIS technology provides the education community with tools to develop a greater understanding of our world through geospatial data analysis. With GIS, students and faculty can integrate and evaluate data from many sources to develop new theories and knowledge.

Initially the GIS have been introduced into Grade 6 and 7 in 98 schools across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. In School Year 2015/2016, it will cover Grade 8 students.

The project is implemented in collaboration with ADEC’s GIS and curriculum teams, Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Centre (ADSIC), and ESRI.

Dr Alaaeldin Aly, ADEC’s Knowledge Management Division Manager, said that ADEC is keen to provide Abu Dhabi school students with 21st century skills. He added,

“The Abu Dhabi School Model focusses on improving critical thinking, problem solving, interpersonal, collaboration and leadership skills in addition to self-awareness and global awareness.”

“This initiative is one of a series implemented by ADEC to integrate ICT and maps technology in teaching and learning. In 2009, ADEC started to use GIS in strategic and administrative areas such as in the Abu Dhabi School Master Plan, licensing, land allocation, searching for schools and iADEC,” said Aly.
