In a groundbreaking move, Karnataka has introduced satellite surveillance to combat illegal forest encroachments, aiming to safeguard its green cover and ecological balance. This innovative system, known as the Forest Cover Change Alert System, leverages satellite forest monitoring to detect unauthorized activities such as tree felling and land encroachments in real-time. Developed in collaboration with the Karnataka State Remote Sensing Application Centre (KSRSAC), it is set to transform forest monitoring across the state.
Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre announced the initiative as part of the government’s zero-tolerance approach to encroachments. He emphasized that the state’s current forest cover is 22%, far below the desired 33%. Protecting and restoring forested areas is critical to achieving this target. Khandre assured that strict action would be taken against violators, irrespective of their influence, and that the new satellite forest monitoring system provides technical evidence for enforcement.

Technology at Work
Since its implementation, the surveillance system has issued 167 warning messages between July and November 2024. These alerts enable local authorities to promptly address violations. Special attention is given to cases involving new encroachments after 2015, although certain exceptions are made for livelihood-related encroachments before this period or those pending under the Forest Rights Act.
Additionally, a task force has been deployed to focus on sensitive areas such as the Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot. The force prioritizes clearing illegal resorts, homestays, and plantations. It also addresses encroachments linked to commercial activities that have caused significant environmental damage.

The government has also cracked down on contractors and engineers responsible for environmentally harmful activities, such as unscientific road expansions that contribute to landslides. Instructions have been issued to ensure compliance with environmental protocols.
A Step Toward Sustainability
The satellite forest monitoring initiative represents Karnataka’s commitment to leveraging technology for ecological preservation. It integrates real-time satellite monitoring with strict policy enforcement, ensuring a proactive response to encroachments. This initiative underscores the state’s resolve to preserve its forests and protect the environment for future generations.
