What is K-GIS 2.0 – Karnataka’s Next-Gen Geo-Spatial Database

Karnataka is gearing up to launch K-GIS 2.0, a modernised version of the Karnataka Geographical Information System designed to bring real-time, dynamic, and accessible geo-spatial data across the state. Approved recently by the Cabinet, this upgraded geo-spatial database aims to unite multiple data sources—satellite imagery, drone surveys, and department-wise geo-tagged information—into one integrated platform.

What is K-GIS 2.0?

K-GIS 2.0 is the next-generation geo-spatial database for Karnataka that consolidates all key mapping data into a single, updated-continuously system. It will enable satellite and drone inputs to refresh the data annually, bringing in up-to-date information from agriculture, urban planning, water resources, disaster response, and more. The system is intended to be accessible not just to government departments but also to private sector entities, researchers, and the general public.

What sets it apart from K-GIS 1.0?

The first version, launched in 2016, offered static maps: clearly showing revenue-village borders, government assets, and essential infrastructure. But it lacked real-time updating and broad accessibility. K-GIS 2.0 aims to fill those gaps. Now departments that did not use the system before—district-level authorities, local bodies, Grama Panchayats—will be able to use geo-spatial database features in their planning and decision-making.

Key features and benefits

  • Dynamic updates: Integration of satellite and drone imagery to keep geo-spatial database current; updates expected annually.
  • Wide accessibility: Available to government, researchers, private firms, and public users—so that local communities and institutions can also use it.
  • Cross-sector integration: Data shared across sectors—urban planning, agriculture, disaster management, water resources.
  • Citizen engagement tools: Apps may allow citizens to track public infrastructure projects, register requests, monitor development in their region.
  • Monetisation potential: Private sector usage and e-services platforms may leverage the system.

Cost and Implementation

The state has earmarked ₹150 crore for the rollout over three years. Budget covers technical infrastructure such as one petabyte all-flash storage, high-capacity backups, and other hardware and software essentials.

Why this matters

K-GIS 2.0 is more than an upgraded map system—it promises to transform governance and service delivery. With a dynamic geo-spatial database, planning becomes data-driven, local bodies can respond faster to citizen needs, and transparency can increase. The new platform is expected to reduce delays, support disaster management, and help Karnataka harness geo-data in ways that benefit both government and people.
