According to recent news, M Venkaiah Naidu, the new Union Minister for Urban Development and Housing and Poverty Alleviation said that building 100 smart cities in country is the top most priority of his ministry.
The Government plans to lower urban density by building satellite towns and cities that are attractive. Within cities, it is important to provide drainage, better sanitation, waste management, water recycling and wifi facilities for public and commercial areas, he added.
These new cities will focus on three areas: education, employment and entertainment.
In order to deal with the population boom and unregulated growth of cities, the government will use geographic information systems (GIS) for for planning and monitoring.
Naidu said that local authorities will be asked to plan using GIS technology so that there is systematic development.
According to Naidu, the Prime Minister has requested for the government to prioritise solving urban problems because more than a third of the population now live in cities.
