Singapore has taken a bold step in reshaping the future of its port operations by launching a maritime digital twin. This move, part of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore’s (MPA) ongoing digitalisation efforts, marks a major milestone in improving port efficiency, maritime safety, and sustainability.
The maritime digital twin is a dynamic virtual representation of the physical maritime environment. It collects real-time data from a variety of sources, including vessel traffic, sea conditions, and port operations. With this information, the digital twin can simulate different scenarios and predict how the port ecosystem will respond. This capability is especially valuable for planning complex port activities and enhancing decision-making.

In addition to the digital twin launch, Singapore is boosting its innovation framework through partnerships in geospatial technology. At the Geo Connect Asia 2024 event, MPA signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with key agencies such as the Singapore Land Authority (SLA), the National University of Singapore (NUS), and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). These collaborations will explore how geospatial data can be used in tandem with the maritime digital twin to unlock new efficiencies.
The MOU with SLA will focus on 3D geospatial models and map-based applications. Meanwhile, MPA and A*STAR aim to study vessel behaviour and traffic management using artificial intelligence and geospatial analytics. The partnership with NUS will support research in autonomous navigation and port optimization. All these efforts work in harmony to feed data into the maritime digital twin, creating a smarter, more responsive port ecosystem.
Singapore’s initiative demonstrates how technology can future-proof maritime operations. By embracing geospatial solutions and building a robust maritime digital twin, the city-state is laying the foundation for a safer, more efficient, and greener maritime future.
